Title I Coordinator

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Title I is a federally funded program that enables our school to provide extra support to students in reading and math.  The program is run by Title I Coordinator and Reading Specialist, Mrs. Barbara Sipler with the aid of five highly qualified Teaching Assistants.  Mrs. Judi Kunkle supports Kindergarten, Mrs. Sharlene Strauss supports 1st and 4th grades, Mrs. Brandy Blackwell supports 1st grade, Mrs. Jennifer Coxe supports 2nd grade, Mrs. Debra Spaide supports 3rd grade, and Mrs. Julia Watkins supports 4th and 5th grades. Even if your child is not in the program he or she will become familiar with the program’s staff members since they often work side by side with teachers in the classroom and administer reading and math assessments to all students in Kindergarten through fifth grade.

Reading and Math assessments are administered at the beginning of the school year, middle of the year, and end of the year.  DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) measures reading skills and AIMSWEB measures math skills that have been identified by extensive research as necessary for future success in reading and math.  Classroom teachers along with the Title I staff review the scores, classroom performance, and grades in language arts and math to determine whether or not a child would benefit from the Title I program.  Parents may also request that their child be placed in Title I at any time.  If a student is recommended to receive services a permission slip is sent to the parents or guardians to sign.  They may accept or decline the extra support.

Once the permission slip is received the child will immediately begin to benefit from Title I services by:

* receiving extra assistance in class by a staff member

*some small group instruction by a qualified staff member where the child receives

assistance completing class work

*occasional pullout to review and practice skills
Reports of the child’s progress in Title I will be sent home each marking period.

Please be aware that there is no negative connotation associated with students who receive Title I services and all students in the program are kept confidential.  Our school is fortunate enough to have the resources to provide this valuable service to so many students.  Should your child be referred to Title I, we hope you will perceive it as a positive experience that is available to help your child achieve success in school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the Elementary School:  427-8687.  Our main purpose is to have every child find success in school!  Thank you for your support.
