Great American Smoke-Out
In recognition of the 36th annual "Great American Smoke-Out", students in the Weatherly Area High School provided a tobacco awareness activity during the lunches on November 17, 2011. The "Great American Smoke-Out" is a national day of awareness that was initiated by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to quit for one day...then maybe continue the trend. The Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) students at WHS made a paperchain that is now hanging in the cafeteria. The chain is made of loops of green, yellow or red paper; green for a non-smoker, yellow for a smoker who has quit, and red for a current smoker. The student body was asked to choose their color of paper link. Conversation regarding available resources to quit smoking were discussed if the student was interested. Weatherly will have available to students a tobacco cessation group led by Coral Johnson from St. Luke's Hospital's Community Health Department. Jacqui Verhauz, tobacco prevention specialist from the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commision, and school nurse Rebekah McFadden facilitated the activity.
